It's odd that doesn't get more of a mention now I think about it. I wonder why GIs only ever seemed to carry records home in the North West too. I grew up near a big base in the Midlands and I don't think we had any big bands from near us in the 1950s or 1960s (though a few in the 1970s). I wonder if they were particularly musical at Burtonwood, or more inclined to give their vinyl away?! Yes, I can imagine that CC just passed on the record name and then just never checked the credits when the paperwork came through. Pye seemed to be a lot more slapdash about that sort of thing too compared to EMI and Decca! Thankyou kindly for your words. There are always people out there who know a lot more than I do or think of something I never did, but I have fun thinking about these things and listening to these albums, or did back when I was writing this site full time anyway! Based on all my readings, Chris Curtis likely found the record in one of his many bin searches, had the group include it in their repertoire and when recording time came, left it to Hatch to do the documentation. Either through misunderstanding or sloppiness the Addrisi origins were omitted. One other point I would like to conjecture ref the Cunard Yanks bringing back records - wasn’t there an American Air Force Base nearby until 1959 - Burtonwood? - where local girls went to dances etc - GIs with records? a PX with a music section? I’ll stop - you’re efforts are unsurpassed in the detail and inclusiveness of this remarkable musical period.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8609845966536781209.post-82026707032967239752023-01-03T15:54:43.637-08:002023-01-03T15:54:43.637-08:00Hello again! Following 'Sugar & Spice' it wouldn't surprise me if Tony Hatch was looking to make a bit of money on the side again, but I'm not sure what he would have to gain from this (unless he had some business interests I don't know about) and I think it might just be a genuine mistake. My CD copy of the 'Sugar and Spice' album has 'Fred Nightingale' down as being published by Sony/ATV and lists the 'wrong' Cherry Stones as being published by Mistletoe Melodies. I was expecting to read that it was another Sony company, but it's independent as far as I can tell and I don't know of any links Hatch might have had with them (presumably if he had, Sugar and Spice would have been published with them too?) I've just looked up the original of the Addrasi Brothers version and that's published by Buddha Music, which turns out to be a subsidiary of BMI. So I'm still confused. I'm amazed no one pointed out the mistake at the time when the song was still pretty recent, or the early 1970s when the Addrasi Brothers were back in vogue again! I'm afraid I'm not sure what else to suggest if you want to pursue it further. It does sound as if The Searchers are planning another farewell tour this year, with Alan Field as their manager. I'm not sure if it would be of any help, but it might be worth contacting him? He might at least have a further contact for you.(You'll find his email at the bottom of the website http://www.the-searchers.co.uk/) Good luck and thankyou for bringing this to my attention! On a youtube post I tried to communicate to the Addrisi Brothers on this topic.<br />Although not many royalties may have been missed - it matters that they received some recognition. Would Hatch (Fred Nightingale of Sugar & Spice) have deliberately misled the Searchers and listeners as to authorship?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8609845966536781209.post-37229691399577132002022-12-26T15:55:02.980-08:002022-12-26T15:55:02.980-08:00Thankyou! Hearing the two songs I'm sure you're right, but it's not up to me to correct the 'official' records or as it were, or producer - even a producer as haphazard as Tony Hatch! Rather than change the review of the song I've left an additional note at the bottom so readers know about your point. It takes a while to update old reviews - and this was a realy old one - but hopefully it will come through soon. Your output is so prodigious that you likely don’t have the time or interest to fix. Anyway, thank you for your efforts - unparalleled!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
